NEWSWORLD: What are the most important issues for American Jews in the coming election?
Hillary has a 70% favorable rating among Jewish Democrats, Rudy leads Republicans with 75 %, according to the American Jewish Committee’s 2007 Annual Survey of American Jewish Opinion. What issues most concern American Jews? The economy, jobs, health care, the War in Iraq, terrorism and national security, education, immigration, the energy crisis. (SOCIAL)SCIENCEWORLD: Big Surprises in a Study of How interfaith Families Raise Their Kids A new overview in the 2007 American Jewish Yearbook compares the rates at which intermarried couples in different cities raise Jewish children. An earlier study found that 60% of the children of intermarriages in the greater Boston area were being raised as Jews. This finding is at at the high end of an enormous range amongst Jewish communities nationally, one that peaks at 75% in South Palm Beach, Florida but in an adjacent county numbers only 18%.
These stats undermine conventional wisdom that intermarriage ipso facto erodes Jewish identity. But the seeming arbitrariness of which communities have high rates and which have low rates raises the intriguing question of why some intermarried couples and their families remain engaged with Judaism while others do not. CULTUREWORLD: Jews Who Abuse: Dating Violence on Campus Dating violence is more prevalent on college campuses than many people think,” says Rella Kaplowitz, a program specialist at Jewish Women International (JWI). “And it doesn’t just refer to physical abuse.” Sexual, verbal, and emotional abuse can be equally damaging. Disturbingly, 1 in 5 college students admits being abused by a current partner.
